How do I care for my furniture?
For many, furniture care can be a confusing, complicated affair, full of long lists of things to keep track of and misguided, half-remembered wisdoms. At MPI, we want to do our part to demystify furniture care, and to show you how you can follow a few basic guidelines to keep your elegant furnishings looking their best. The following is a furniture care product guide to help keep your furniture in tip-top shape.
Wood: Our wood is kiln-dried. In certain climates, the wood may naturally expand or contract and may develop slight openings and cracks. These may occur in and between the joined panels of the piece, but they will not compromise its structural integrity. Openings and cracks are part of the product’s rustic nature and distress. However, if you so desire, you may care for these by filling them or concealing them using products available at most hardware stores. Cracks within the wood, knots, indentations and other superficial imperfections are considered rustic nature and natural distress. Since our furniture is handmade, there are elements of that construction (filled nail holes, etc.) that can be seen upon close inspection. They blend in with the look of our furniture and add to the rustic charm. Our products are also hand-finished; pieces will have a consistent overall tone, (i.e. light vs. dark) but there are some variances in the finishes and therefore we cannot guarantee matching. Please also note that grain, texture and tones will vary from piece to piece due to the nature of the wood and its hand-finished processing.
Maintenance and Care: To maintain the appearance of your furniture, simply dust regularly with a clean soft lint-free cloth. Do not clean furniture with a damp cloth or sponge. If you feel polishing is necessary, we recommend a wax polish. A light application should only be necessary once or twice a year. Do not use wood oil treatments (i.e. lemon oil), wet wash cloths, Pledge or other polishes with strong chemical compounds to care for your furniture.
Spills: If you spill water or liquids on your furniture, wipe immediately. If water sits on the surface, it will stain. Always use coasters when setting glassware on a table.
Direct Sunlight: Sunlight, as well as water and humidity levels should always be attended when choosing where to place a piece of furniture. Never set furniture in areas that are exposed to direct sunlight or extreme heat for extended periods of time.
Repairs: Since stripping the finish is the only way to truly repair scratches, dents, and water rings, we strongly recommend seeking professional care when dealing with these and other damages.
Cleaning Leather: Leather can be cleaned using a slightly damp cloth. To remove more severe stains and blemishes, we recommend using a professional leather care product.
Follow these simple furniture care instructions and your pieces will look their very best for many years to come.
